WBPSC Fire Operator: A Practical Guide for Aspirants
The Fire Operator post offers an opportunity to work with the West Bengal Fire and Emergency Services. Unlike a conventional office position, it demands physical fitness, courage, discipline, technical awareness and the ability to remain calm during emergencies.
Recruitment for this post has previously been conducted by the West Bengal Public Service Commission. The selection process included not only a written examination but also physical measurement and demanding endurance tests.
This guide explains the eligibility conditions, physical standards, endurance events, written examination, salary and selection process used in the previous WBPSC Fire Operator recruitment.
> Important: This is an evergreen examination guide, not a notification for an active recruitment. A future advertisement may change the age limit, vacancies, salary, physical standards, test events or selection scheme.
What Is a Fire Operator?
A Fire Operator is an operational employee of the West Bengal Fire and Emergency Services under the state’s Fire and Emergency Services Department.
The role can involve responding to fires, accidents, rescue situations and other emergencies. Fire Operators may be required to handle equipment, climb ladders, carry heavy loads, assist rescue teams and work in difficult or hazardous environments.
It is a disciplined field position rather than a desk-only government job.
Who Conducts Fire Operator Recruitment?
The previous large-scale Fire Operator recruitment was conducted by the West Bengal Public Service Commission under Advertisement No. 15/2018.
Candidates should check the official WBPSC website for any future recruitment advertisement.
Information circulating through social media, coaching channels or messaging groups should not be considered confirmed until WBPSC publishes an official notice.
Fire Operator Eligibility Criteria
Under the previous recruitment, eligibility was determined through several conditions:
- Academic qualification
- Age
- Bengali language ability
- Physical measurements
- Endurance-test performance
- Nationality and other service requirements
Meeting the educational requirement alone was not enough. Candidates also had to clear the physical stages.
Educational Qualification
The previous WBPSC advertisement required candidates to have passed the Madhyamik examination or an equivalent examination from a government-recognised board or institution.
A higher secondary, diploma or graduate qualification was not compulsory under that recruitment.
Candidates with higher qualifications could apply if they also satisfied the Madhyamik, age, language and physical requirements.
A future notification may prescribe a different educational standard.
Bengali Language Requirement
Candidates were required to be able to read, write and speak Bengali.
The compulsory Bengali requirement did not apply in the same way to candidates whose mother tongue was Nepali, subject to the exact conditions stated in the official advertisement.
Language ability could be tested during the personality-test or interview stage.
Previous Age Limit
For the recruitment advertised in 2018, the prescribed age range was:
- Minimum age: 18 years
- Maximum age: 27 years
Age was calculated as on the date mentioned in that advertisement.
Upper-age relaxation was available for eligible reserved categories according to the applicable West Bengal Government rules.
Candidates should note that the advertisement specifically stated that certain general provisions for raising the age limit would not apply to that recruitment.
A future recruitment may use a different cut-off date or age range. Therefore, the previous age limit should be used only for understanding the post, not for deciding present eligibility.
Physical Measurement Test
The Physical Measurement Test, commonly called PMT, was mandatory.
Candidates who qualified in the written examination were called for physical measurement. Those who failed to meet the required measurement could not proceed to the endurance test.
General Physical Standards
For candidates of all categories except the communities given a separate relaxation:
| Measurement | Required Standard |
|---|---|
| Minimum height | 167.6 cm or 5 feet 6 inches |
| Minimum chest | 81.3 cm or 32 inches |
| Minimum chest expansion | 5 cm or 2 inches |
Relaxed Height Standard
For Gorkhas, Garhwalis, Rajbanshis and other recognised hill tribes, the previous standards were:
| Measurement | Required Standard |
|---|---|
| Minimum height | 160 cm or 5 feet 3 inches |
| Minimum chest | 81.3 cm |
| Minimum chest expansion | 5 cm |
Candidates claiming a relaxed physical standard may have to produce a valid community certificate or another document required by the commission.
How to Measure Height and Chest Properly
Before preparing for recruitment, candidates should have their measurements checked accurately.
Height should be measured:
- Without shoes
- On a flat surface
- With the body standing straight
- With heels together
- With the head in a natural position
Chest measurement normally includes:
- Measurement before expansion
- Measurement after full inhalation
- Calculation of the difference between the two
Exercise can improve posture and breathing capacity, but candidates should not assume that training will significantly change their natural chest structure or height.
WBPSC Fire Operator Endurance Test
Candidates who passed the Physical Measurement Test were required to appear in an endurance test.
Under the previous official advertisement, candidates had to qualify in any four out of six events.
The events were:
| Endurance Event | Required Performance |
|---|---|
| 1,000-metre run | Within 5 minutes |
| Ladder climbing | Within 20 seconds |
| Sandbag carry | Carry a 63.5 kg sandbag continuously for at least 50 metres |
| Staircase run | Run up three storeys of a standard staircase within 1 minute |
| Rope climbing | Climb using only the hands within 60 seconds |
| High jump | 1.22 metres or more |
These events tested different physical abilities. Running alone was not enough.
What Each Endurance Event Tests
1,000-Metre Run
This measures cardiovascular fitness, pace control and the ability to continue working under physical strain.
Completing the distance within five minutes requires regular running practice rather than occasional sprinting.
Ladder Climbing
The ladder event examines climbing speed, coordination and confidence at height.
Candidates should not practise on an unsecured ladder. Training should be supervised and conducted with proper safety arrangements.
Heavy Sandbag Carry
Carrying a 63.5 kg sandbag for 50 metres tests functional strength, grip, balance and safe load movement.
This is a demanding event. Candidates should build strength gradually under the guidance of a qualified trainer instead of trying the full load without preparation.
Staircase Run
Running up three storeys within one minute requires leg strength, balance and cardiovascular capacity.
Training can include controlled stair climbing, step-ups and lower-body conditioning.
Rope Climbing
Climbing a rope using only the hands places a heavy demand on grip, arms, shoulders, back and core strength.
A candidate who is otherwise fit may still struggle with this event without specific rope-climbing practice.
High Jump
The 1.22-metre high jump tests explosive power, technique and body control.
Jumping practice should be conducted on a suitable surface with safe landing equipment.
Is Every Endurance Event Mandatory?
Under the previous recruitment, candidates were required to qualify in any four of the six prescribed endurance events.
That did not make physical preparation optional. A candidate who prepared for only four events could be eliminated if one of those attempts went poorly.
A safer strategy is to develop at least five events while maintaining a backup option.
Future recruitment rules may change the events or require a different number of qualifying performances.
WBPSC Fire Operator Selection Process
The previous selection process followed this order:
- Written examination
- Physical Measurement Test
- Endurance Test
- Assessment of desirable qualifications
- Personality test
- Document verification
- Final merit list and recommendation
The physical measurement and endurance stages were qualifying in nature. Candidates had to pass each required stage to remain in the recruitment process.
Marks Distribution Under the Previous Recruitment
The official advertisement distributed the overall assessment in the following proportions:
| Component | Share of Total Marks |
|---|---|
| Written examination | 80% |
| Desirable qualifications | 10% |
| Personality test | 10% |
Physical Measurement and Endurance Tests were mandatory qualifying stages, but the previous advertisement prepared the final merit list using marks from the written examination, desirable qualifications and personality test.
The commission had the authority to fix qualifying marks in the written examination.
Written Examination
The written examination was the most heavily weighted part of the recruitment process.
The original advertisement allowed WBPSC to prescribe the examination scheme and syllabus separately. Therefore, candidates should not treat coaching-centre syllabus lists as permanent official rules.
A future examination notice should be checked for:
- Subjects
- Number of questions
- Total marks
- Examination duration
- Negative marking
- Question standard
- Language of the paper
For general preparation, candidates can strengthen the areas commonly tested in Madhyamik-level competitive examinations, including General Studies, basic Arithmetic, language ability and everyday science. However, the official syllabus for the recruitment cycle must receive first priority.
Suggested General Studies Preparation
Useful preparation areas may include:
- Indian history
- Indian freedom movement
- Geography of India
- Geography of West Bengal
- Indian Constitution and polity
- General science
- Environment
- Current affairs
- West Bengal general knowledge
- Disaster management awareness
- Basic fire-safety awareness
Fire-safety knowledge should supplement the official syllabus rather than replace it.
Suggested Arithmetic Preparation
Candidates can prepare Madhyamik-level topics such as:
- Number system
- Simplification
- Fractions and decimals
- Ratio and proportion
- Percentage
- Average
- Profit and loss
- Simple interest
- Time and work
- Time, speed and distance
- Mensuration
- Basic algebra
Timed practice is important because physical recruitment examinations can still have a competitive written cut-off.
Desirable Qualifications
The previous recruitment awarded additional marks for certain desirable qualifications.
These were:
Firefighting Experience
A candidate could receive additional credit for at least one year of firefighting experience in an eligible government department, organisation, public-sector undertaking or autonomous body.
The previous allocation was 5% of the total marks.
The experience had to be supported by appropriate documents describing the duration and nature of the duties.
ITI Certificate
An eligible Industrial Training Institute certificate could carry 3% of the total marks.
The listed disciplines included:
- Civil Engineering
- Electrical Engineering
- Mechanical Engineering
- Automobile Engineering
The precise certificate title, recognition and equivalence had to satisfy the commission.
Swimming Certificate
A swimming certificate from a government-recognised club or institute could carry 2% of the total marks.
Knowing how to swim without holding an accepted certificate did not necessarily qualify a candidate for these marks.
These qualifications were desirable rather than substitutes for the essential Madhyamik and physical requirements.
Personality Test
Candidates who cleared the written and physical stages could be called for a personality test.
The panel could consider:
- General awareness
- Communication ability
- Mental alertness
- Discipline
- Confidence without recklessness
- Understanding of the Fire Operator role
- Ability to work in a team
- Response to emergency situations
- Bengali language ability
- Suitability for demanding public service
Candidates should avoid presenting the job as only a source of salary or government security. A realistic understanding of emergency duty, risk, teamwork and public responsibility is important.
Document Verification
Candidates may be asked to produce documents such as:
- Madhyamik admit card or age proof
- Madhyamik mark sheet and certificate
- Bengali or Nepali language-related records, where required
- Category certificate
- Community certificate for relaxed physical standards
- ITI certificate
- Firefighting experience certificate
- Swimming certificate
- Identity proof
- Application form
- Call letters
- Passport-size photographs
- Other documents requested by WBPSC
A certificate claimed for additional marks must meet the authority, format and recognition requirements specified by the commission.
Previous Fire Operator Salary
Advertisement No. 15/2018 carried the following pre-revised pay structure:
Pay Band 2: ₹5,400–₹25,200 with Grade Pay of ₹2,600
The post also carried admissible allowances under state government rules.
West Bengal’s pay structure has since been revised. A future notification should be checked for the current pay level, starting basic pay and allowances applicable to newly recruited Fire Operators.
Salary may include:
- Basic pay
- Dearness Allowance
- House Rent Allowance
- Medical allowance or benefits
- Other admissible allowances
Applicable deductions may include retirement-system contributions, professional tax, income tax and other authorised recoveries.
Because the previous advertisement used an older pay structure, candidates should not calculate present take-home salary directly from those figures.
Fire Operator Job Responsibilities
The exact duties depend on posting, training and operational requirements.
A Fire Operator may be required to:
- Respond to fire calls
- Assist in rescue operations
- Handle fire hoses and firefighting equipment
- Operate or assist with pumps and related systems
- Climb ladders and access difficult locations
- Carry equipment or injured persons
- Support evacuation
- Maintain operational readiness
- Check equipment and protective gear
- Participate in drills
- Work under the direction of senior fire-service personnel
- Assist during building collapses, accidents, floods or other emergencies
The job may involve heat, smoke, height, confined spaces, heavy loads and irregular duty hours.
Working Hours and Posting
Emergency services do not operate only during standard office hours.
Depending on departmental arrangements, Fire Operators may have:
- Shift duty
- Night duty
- Weekend or holiday duty
- Emergency call-outs
- Training schedules
- Station maintenance responsibilities
Candidates should also be prepared for posting according to the operational needs of the West Bengal Fire and Emergency Services.
A posting near the candidate’s home is not guaranteed.
Medical Fitness
Physical measurements and endurance performance are not the same as medical fitness.
Before appointment, candidates may be required to meet medical standards prescribed for the service. Conditions affecting vision, hearing, movement, cardiovascular health or safe performance may be examined by the competent medical authority.
The standards mentioned in the latest recruitment and appointment rules will prevail.
How to Prepare for the Physical Tests
Physical preparation should begin gradually and safely.
Build Running Endurance
Start with comfortable jogging and increase distance over time. Once the body adapts, introduce timed 1,000-metre practice and interval training.
Running at maximum effort every day can lead to injury.
Improve Functional Strength
Useful exercises can include:
- Squats
- Lunges
- Step-ups
- Farmer’s carries
- Deadlift variations under supervision
- Pull-ups or assisted pull-ups
- Grip exercises
- Core training
The purpose is to improve safe movement and strength, not simply appearance.
Practise Event-Specific Skills
Ladder climbing, rope climbing, heavy carrying and high jump require technique.
Practise these events only with suitable equipment, a safe environment and qualified supervision.
Allow Recovery
Strength and endurance improve during recovery as well as training. Include rest days, adequate sleep, hydration and a balanced diet.
Persistent pain, dizziness, breathing difficulty or chest discomfort should not be ignored.
A Simple Weekly Preparation Structure
A balanced routine may include:
- Two running or interval-training days
- Two strength-training days
- One event-specific practice day
- One light mobility or recovery day
- At least one full rest day
The schedule should be adjusted according to fitness level and medical advice.
Candidates who have been inactive for a long time should seek professional guidance before beginning intense training.
Common Mistakes to Avoid
- Treating an old advertisement as an active recruitment notice
- Focusing only on the written examination
- Checking height and chest measurements too late
- Preparing for only four endurance events
- Attempting a 63.5 kg carry without progressive training
- Practising ladder or rope climbing without safety support
- Using an unrecognised swimming certificate
- Claiming firefighting experience without proper records
- Ignoring the Bengali language requirement
- Depending on unofficial vacancy or examination-date claims
- Using the old pay band to estimate the present salary
- Concealing medical problems that may create a safety risk
Is Fire Operator a Police Post?
No. A Fire Operator works under the West Bengal Fire and Emergency Services. The post is connected with firefighting, rescue and emergency response rather than policing.
Can Female Candidates Apply?
The previous advertisement and any future notification must be checked carefully for category-specific eligibility and physical standards.
Candidates should not assume eligibility or ineligibility based on unofficial summaries. The wording of the current advertisement will determine who may apply and which physical standards apply.
Is an ITI Certificate Compulsory?
Under the previous recruitment, an ITI certificate in a listed discipline was a desirable qualification carrying additional marks. It was not a replacement for the essential Madhyamik qualification.
Candidates without an eligible ITI certificate could still satisfy the essential educational requirement, subject to all other conditions.
Is Swimming Compulsory?
Swimming itself was not listed as a separate qualifying endurance event in the previous advertisement.
However, a recognised swimming certificate could carry additional marks under desirable qualifications.
A future recruitment may use different rules.

Final Words
WBPSC Fire Operator recruitment requires a combination of academic preparation and genuine physical readiness.
A candidate may perform well in the written examination and still be eliminated during measurement or endurance testing. Similarly, physical strength alone cannot compensate for a weak written score because the written examination carried the largest share of merit marks under the previous process.
The best approach is to prepare both parts together: revise competitive-exam subjects, develop running endurance, build functional strength and practise event-specific skills safely.
Most importantly, wait for a fresh WBPSC advertisement before treating any vacancy, date, age limit or salary figure as current.

The latest WBPSC advertisement, departmental rules and instructions issued by the competent authorities will prevail.
